Letter 031: Just In Time

Greetings, hero! 

It seems like it was just yesterday when I was reminding a hero that mentors never arrive early, or late, but precisely when they mean to. And this letter is no different: written by me, at was is right now from my perspective, but for you is at some random point in the past—but now has found you at exactly the right time.

See there are plenty of people who won’t see this week’s letter, and that’s fine by me. Life is full of moments, good and bad, and many of those moments are times when heroes like you don’t need an old mentor like me slowing them down! Instead, I write my letters, and trust that help will find those who ask for it (and I can cheer on those who don’t need it right now!)

It’s the same thing I see play out when, after asking them if they’ve read a certain book or novel, they get an anguished look on their face, and say “no, but I know I need to” or “ah, I’ve heard it’s so good but I’ve been putting it off.” As if, in a world full of millions of books, anyone had time for all of them—or as if everyone except them was in some kind of secret club of people who had the willpower or time to read literally every book that anyone referenced around them!

That’s not to say that there aren’t books that I think benefit every hero who reads them. And it certainly doesn’t stop me from recommending great advice whenever I get the chance. I just know, from experience, that books, words, and advice, like wizards, always arrive precisely when they mean to.

So when someone tells me, with a little hint of shame, that they know they should have read a book, but haven’t gotten around to it quite yet, I just smile. Because I know that, when it’s time, the book will find them. I don’t know why it works that way, I just know it does. And if you don’t believe me… Well, you’re reading this now, aren’t you?
